In the charity proposal, we said that once established, we would ‘take a group of 12 individuals with lived experience of mental health issues on a programme of self-development as co-founders of the charity. Once recruited and inducted, the co-founders will be the decision makers and delivery agents for projects and activities within a specified geographical area, which will be designed in partnership with those accessing them (The charities members)’ The idea is that there are six specific areas of work that basically make up the roles needed to run the charity. For each role there will be two co-founders, meaning that the 12 co-founders will be the team who run things ‘on the ground’. The structure of the charity will be: Board of Trustees = Responsible for governance and finance. Programme Co-ordinator = Responsible for overseeing the charities’ objectives and operations. Recruiting and supervising Co-founders & volunteers. Charity Co-Founders = Responsible for planning and running the charities’ activities in consultation with its members and volunteers Volunteer Team = Responsible for the voluntary activity areas of their choosing in agreement with their named Charity Co-Founder and Programme Co-ordinator. Charity Members = All charity members accessing activities. Associate Members = Members who don’t necessarily access activities themselves. We will be applying for funding to provide training / education and qualifications for co-founders. We’ll also be matching up co-founders with mentors – professional people who are successful in the area in which the co-founder is working. The mentors will help co-founders develop their knowledge and confidence in what they are doing which, along with the qualifications gained will help them move into paid employment externally. The co-founder areas of responsibility are as follows (and as mentioned earlier, there will be two people in each role): Activities Co-ordinator – this will involve arranging and delivering activities including delivering training (teaching). The types of qualifications tied to this role will be ‘Train the trainer’; NVQ Awards in Adult Education; Safeguarding; First Aid; Events Management etc Fundraising Officer – this will involve thinking of innovative ways of making money for the charity, finding and applying for grants. The types of qualifications tied to this role will be in communications, PR, How to write successful funding bids etc Service Administrator – this will involve all types of admin including paperwork, filing, updating IT systems, organising the activities diaries, booking venues and making orders. The types of qualifications tied to this role will be QCF / NVQ in IT and Business Management, Admin skills, communications and accounting. Media and PR – this will involve developing and updating social media accounts, issuing press releases, promoting the charity and its activities / events. The types of qualifications linked to this role will be in marketing and media relations. Social Enterprise Manager – this will involve consulting with the charities members to design, plan and deliver a new social enterprise start up to work alongside the charity in creating financial sustainability. The types of qualifications linked to this role will be Business Management NVQ and NVQ’s related to the social enterprise activity e.g catering. Football Coach – this will involve co-ordinating a team of volunteer coaches to work alongside you planning and delivering football training sessions across wales. The types of qualifications linked to this role will be Coaching Licences; Safeguarding; First Aid in Football and other physical activity related training. All initial co-founders will remain in place for 2 years (unless they secure paid employment within this time of course!) and will become mentors to the next cohort and so on. All subsequent co-founders will remain in place for 12 months. (The first cohort will be in place for longer as they will be establishing the roles, which will take some time). There will be a recruitment process for co-founders, as these are intensive volunteer roles which require people to tick all the following boxes (so to speak): · Not currently actively addicted to alcohol or drugs · Not currently on bail or probation / subject to community order or licence conditions · Able to commit to a programme of education (e.g. NVQ) in terms of time and level of literacy (Note: If people are not able to meet all these criteria right now, but like the idea of the co-founder role, it’s ok, there will be a wider MHFW Volunteer Programme where members can develop skills & experience and aim to meet these criteria ready for the next cohort!) So that’s the co-founder role. In as small a nutshell as possible! The next steps will be to start applying for funding and getting the co-founder recruitment process out to everyone. There will be some consultation coming up around this in the next couple of weeks.
